Extractions/Impacted Wisdom Teeth
To “extract”, or not to “extract”, that is the question,
Wisdom teeth (third molars) are the last set of teeth to develop (usually between ages 17 and 25). They will neither cause problems nor necessitate removal if they emerge cleanly from the gum line, are properly aligned with your existing teeth, and the jawbone is large enough to allow room for them. However, wisdom teeth usually fail to emerge through the gum line due to improper alignment and hence “impact” with neighboring teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth get trapped between the jawbone and the gum tissue causing:
- Swelling, pain, and infection of the surrounding gum tissue
- Possible permanent damage to nearby teeth, gums, and jawbone
- Potential formation of cysts that can destroy sections of the jaw bone
Hence, dentists recommend the surgical removal of impacted wisdom teeth. Removal is normally performed under local anesthesia although other sedation dentistry techniques are also offered.
